Head of Real Estate Client Development

Matthew Abbott, Head of Real Estate Client Development, is responsible for managing client relationships and business development across L&G’s range of long-standing core funds. Matthew Joined Legal & General’s asset management business in September 2019, from Mercer, where he was a real estate fund researcher and consultant to institutional investors across Europe. This involved ensuring that Mercer’s clients had access to deep fund manager research and covered core, value-add, opportunistic and debt strategies in the UK and Europe, as well as consulting with them on appropriate asset allocation decisions. Prior to that, he was a property fund researcher and investment consultant at Aon Hewitt, where he started his career in 2003.

Matthew holds a BSc in maths from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and an MSc in real estate from Kingston University. He holds the IMC, is a part-qualified actuary and is Vice Chair of AREF’s Corporate Governance Committee. He has previously sat on the AREF Investor Committee, the IPF Indirect Funds Working Group and IPD’s UK Property Funds Index Consultative Group.

Prior to joining Legal & General, he was a Partner at IP Group plc, one of the largest global university-linked investment platforms, where he worked for c. 10 years across healthcare and leading the group’s fund management & advisory business. His earlier career involved roles in the healthcare advisory teams of JPMorgan and Jefferies. He holds a BSc in biology and an MBA from London Business School.
