James joined L&G in 2024 as a researcher and has a strong background in technology and innovation. His research on digital infrastructure has spanned from market and investment dynamics to the impacts of novel technologies including generative AI and quantum computing. Before L&G, James was a post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Physics at Imperial College London investigating novel hardware for AI, co-founded a VC-backed biotech start-up that aimed to innovate new methods for early cancer detection, and completed a PhD in Physics – also at Imperial College – on organic semiconductors for neurotechnology.

While scepticism runs high, there’s potential for AI to have far bigger impact on the economy and markets than historical parallels suggest.

Matteo joined L&G in 2015 and leads the firm on its digital infrastructure investments. He is a Non-Executive Director across portfolio companies such as Kao Data, and is also a member of L&G's Private Markets leadership team. Prior to L&G, Matteo worked in infra-private equity at Terra Firma, investing in and managing asset backed-businesses, and at Morgan Stanley before that.

Matteo is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and speaks English, Italian, French and Japanese. Matteo graduated with a Masters in Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering (MEng) from Cambridge University.
