With Europe’s infrastructure transition representing a potential €1tn+ annual investment opportunity over the next five years[1],  L&G’s Matteo Colombo (Managing Director, Head of Digital Infrastructure Investments) and John Carey (Head of Infrastructure Debt UK & Europe) sat down for an IPE-led webinar to discuss all things about the continent’s shifting infrastructure needs. They were joined by Rosheen McGuckian, CEO of NTR, with the following key takeaways stemming from the discussion:

·         Data sovereignty and energy independence: The pushes for more data storage in Europe and a reducing reliance on US and Russian oil and gas are driving demand for transition infrastructure.

·         Innovation and integration: Technologies like long-duration storage and green hydrogen are crucial for the infrastructure transition, highlighting the intersection of digitalisation and decarbonisation.

·         Diverse investment options: There are many ways to access this potential investment opportunity – from green bonds to private market equity/debt strategies. It is crucial, the panel noted, to understand risk/return profiles, choose the right partner, and ensure managers are transparent with their proposed strategy.
